Elche moved to within touching distance of safety with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Getafe at the Estadio Manuel Martínez Valero on Sunday — a result that keeps them alive in the relegation struggle with two games remaining. The hosts struck early through Víctor Chust's 19th-minute opener, then weathered a second-half storm made significantly easier when the visitors were reduced to ten men shortly before the interval.
The opening exchanges saw Elche seize the initiative against a sluggish Getafe side. Inside 19 minutes, the home defence broke quickly up the left flank, and Chust — operating in an unfamiliar attacking role — showed composure to finish beyond the visitors' goalkeeper. It was a clinical start from the hosts, who immediately shifted into a more cautious shape to protect their lead.

Getafe, with 59 per cent possession, struggled to carve out meaningful openings in the first half. Their inability to convert territorial dominance into clear chances proved costly when, on 39 minutes, defender Djené received a straight red card for a serious foul — a turning point that fundamentally reshaped the contest. As the BBC noted, the sending-off cost Getafe any realistic prospect of mounting a genuine comeback, leaving them to chase the game with a numerical disadvantage they could scarcely afford.
The second half became a test of Elche's resolve rather than a spectacle. With ten men, Getafe made three substitutions inside 20 minutes — Damián Cáceres departing on 53 minutes, followed by Allan Nyom and Domingos Duarte on 71 and 72 respectively — in a bid to reorganise their shattered shape. Yet the numerical disadvantage proved insurmountable. Elche, down to ten themselves after a succession of yellow cards (André Silva on 66, Álvaro Rodríguez on 69, and Martim Neto on 78), nevertheless managed the game with discipline and nous, denying Getafe the space to threaten goalkeeper Edgar Badia.
Chust emerged as the standout performer with a rating of 8.2, capping a superb display — not only with the goal but with resolute defending that kept Getafe at bay throughout his 85 minutes on the pitch. Pedro Bigas (7.5) complemented him admirably at the heart of the home defence, whilst Getafe's Zaid Romero (7.6) battled tirelessly but found his efforts overshadowed by his side's indiscipline and attacking impotence.

With just three shots on goal against Elche's firm defensive organisation, Getafe were unable to carve out a breakthrough despite cameos from substitutes Mario Martín in the closing stages. Their frustration boiled over into needless fouls — 16 in total — as they chased a result that never arrived. Elche's willingness to absorb pressure and hit on the counter-attack, evident in their controlled passing and positioning, proved the decisive factor.
The win lifts Elche to 42 points and out of the bottom three — a genuinely precious outcome given the frenetic nature of La Liga's relegation battle. Getafe, now on 44 points, slip further from Champions League qualification, though they retain a two-point buffer above the drop zone. With round 38 looming and Elche facing Girona away next weekend, the hosts have breathed new life into their survival bid, whilst Getafe's erratic form — undone by poor discipline — has left their season hanging in the balance.
